About Tindamax
Overview
Tindamax contains tinidazole, an antimicrobial medicine. It treats trichomoniasis, giardiasis, intestinal amebiasis, amebic liver abscess and bacterial vaginosis. Its uses include giardiasis and amebiasis in adults and children older than three years, and bacterial vaginosis in non-pregnant adult women. It acts against certain parasites and bacteria that cause these infections.
What it treats
- Trichomoniasis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. - Giardiasis in adults and children older than three years. - Intestinal amebiasis and amebic liver abscess in adults and children older than three years; not for symptom-free passage of amebic cysts. - Bacterial vaginosis in non-pregnant adult women.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include a metallic or bitter taste, nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite, stomach upset or cramps, weakness, tiredness, headache, dizziness and constipation. Diarrhea, gas and vaginal yeast infections have also been reported. Stop taking Tindamax and contact a doctor immediately if you develop seizures, numbness, tingling, problems with coordination or other unusual nervous system symptoms. Severe allergic reactions have been reported, including hives, swelling and serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Seek immediate medical attention for swelling or a severe rash. Other reported effects include temporary reductions in white blood cells, liver abnormalities and palpitations. Contact your doctor if you develop fever, a racing or pounding heartbeat, or symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection, which may need antifungal treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Tindamax if you have previously had an allergic reaction to tinidazole or another nitroimidazole medicine, or if you have Cockayne syndrome. Severe, irreversible liver damage and fatal acute liver failure have been reported in people with Cockayne syndrome taking metronidazole, a related medicine. Tindamax should be used with caution in people with blood disorders, as it may temporarily lower white blood cell counts. Seizures and nerve problems have been reported; stop taking Tindamax if abnormal neurological symptoms develop. Vaginal yeast infection may also develop and require antifungal treatment. Data on use in children are limited to treatment of giardiasis and amebiasis in those aged 3 years and older.
Interactions
The following interactions have been reported with metronidazole, a chemically related medicine, and may also occur with Tindamax (tinidazole): • Warfarin and other oral coumarin blood thinners: Your prescriber may need to adjust your blood thinner treatment during tinidazole treatment and for up to 8 days afterward. • Alcohol: Avoid alcoholic drinks and alcohol-containing products during treatment and for up to 3 days afterward. • Lithium: Blood lithium levels should be monitored. • Cyclosporine or tacrolimus: Monitoring for toxic effects may be needed. • Fluorouracil: Monitoring for toxic effects may be needed. • Phenytoin or fosphenytoin: Your prescriber may need to adjust your anticonvulsant treatment, tinidazole treatment, or both. • Medicines that increase or block the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4: These may reduce tinidazole’s effect or increase side effects, so monitoring may be needed. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
