About TICE BCG
Overview
TICE BCG is a prescription medicine containing weakened, live BCG bacteria, administered directly into the bladder. It is used to treat and prevent carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the urinary bladder. It is also used after transurethral resection (TUR) to help prevent primary or recurrent stage Ta or T1 papillary bladder tumors. It is not recommended for stage TaG1 tumors unless the risk of recurrence is high, and it is not indicated for papillary tumors beyond stage T1.
What it treats
- Treatment and prevention of carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the urinary bladder. - Prevention of primary or recurrent stage Ta or T1 papillary bladder tumors following transurethral resection (TUR). Not recommended for stage TaG1 papillary tumors unless the risk of recurrence is judged to be high. Not indicated for papillary tumors beyond stage T1.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include pain or burning when urinating, needing to urinate more often or urgently, blood in the urine, bladder cramps, and flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, tiredness and feeling unwell. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and muscle or joint pain may also occur. Bladder irritation typically starts 4–6 hours after treatment and lasts 24–72 hours. Side effects may become more frequent and more severe with repeated treatments. Serious infections can occur, including BCG infection that spreads throughout the body and causes sepsis, which can be fatal. Infection may also affect the lungs, liver, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, lymph nodes, prostate or testicles. Contact a doctor immediately if you develop a persistent fever, a sudden illness with fever, or fever and a general feeling of illness that progressively worsen. These symptoms require immediate assessment for systemic infection, and BCG treatment should be stopped if such infection is suspected.

Interactions
TICE BCG should not be used with medicines that suppress the immune system or bone marrow, or with radiation therapy, because these can interfere with the immune response. Tell your doctor if you are receiving any of these treatments. Antimicrobial medicines used to treat other infections may reduce the effectiveness of TICE BCG. Tell your doctor about any treatment for another infection. Antituberculosis medicines, such as isoniazid, should not be used to prevent or treat the local urinary irritation caused by TICE BCG.
