About Teflaro
Overview
Teflaro is a prescription antibiotic containing ceftaroline fosamil, given by intravenous injection. It treats acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia caused by susceptible bacteria. Its antibacterial action comes from ceftaroline, a cephalosporin antibiotic.
What it treats
- Acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible bacteria in adults and children, including newborns of at least 34 weeks’ gestational age who are at least 12 days old. - Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia caused by susceptible bacteria in adults and children aged 2 months and older.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea and rash. Vomiting and fever are also common in children. Serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis; Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea; neurological reactions; and possible drug-induced hemolytic anemia, in which red blood cells are destroyed. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction. Contact a doctor if diarrhea or neurological problems occur, or if anemia develops during or after treatment. Ceftaroline can also cause a blood test called the direct Coombs’ test to become positive. If anemia develops, a doctor should investigate whether the medicine is causing red blood cell destruction.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Teflaro if you have a known serious allergy to ceftaroline or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. Treatment must be stopped if an allergic reaction occurs. Caution is needed in people with impaired kidney function because neurological adverse reactions have been reported with ceftaroline and other cephalosporins. If these occur, the prescriber may need to stop treatment or adjust it. Diarrhea during treatment needs assessment for Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea. If anemia develops during or after treatment, tests are needed to check for drug-induced destruction of red blood cells, and stopping treatment may be considered. Ceftaroline can also cause a direct Coombs’ blood test to become positive.
