About Tazicef
Overview
Tazicef contains ceftazidime, a broad-spectrum antibacterial medicine given by injection. It treats certain bacterial infections, including pneumonia and infections of the skin, urinary tract, bloodstream, bones, joints and abdomen. It works against bacteria that are susceptible to ceftazidime, so it should be used only when these bacteria are confirmed or strongly suspected to be causing the infection.
What it treats
Tazicef is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: • Lower respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia • Skin and related tissue infections • Complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections • Bacterial bloodstream infections (septicemia) • Bone and joint infections • Gynecologic infections, including infections of the uterine lining and pelvic tissues • Infections within the abdomen, including peritonitis • Central nervous system infections, including meningitis
Safety information
Side effects
The most commonly reported side effects of Tazicef (ceftazidime) were inflammation at the injection site or in the vein, itching, rash, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Less frequent effects included headache, dizziness, tingling, oral thrush and vaginal inflammation. Seek urgent medical help for serious allergic reactions, including swelling, difficulty breathing or a severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and serious skin reactions such as Stevens–Johnson syndrome have been reported. Contact a doctor promptly for severe diarrhea during or after treatment, which may be a sign of serious bowel inflammation. Seizures have also been reported. Serious nervous system effects, including impaired brain function, coma and involuntary muscle movements, have occurred in patients with kidney impairment whose ceftazidime dosing was not adjusted. Other reported serious effects include kidney impairment, jaundice and rare cases of anemia caused by the breakdown of red blood cells. Temporary changes in blood cell counts and liver or kidney blood tests can occur. Some reactions reported after marketing have an uncertain frequency or an unconfirmed link to Tazicef.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Tazicef if you have a known allergy to ceftazidime or any cephalosporin antibiotic.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take aminoglycoside antibiotics or potent diuretics (water pills), such as furosemide. Kidney damage has been reported when cephalosporin antibiotics, the group that includes Tazicef, are used with these medicines. Kidney function should be carefully monitored, especially during prolonged aminoglycoside treatment, because aminoglycosides can harm the kidneys and hearing. Chloramphenicol may oppose ceftazidime’s antibacterial action. This combination should be avoided.
