About Tavalisse

Overview

Tavalisse is a prescription tablet containing fostamatinib disodium hexahydrate, a kinase inhibitor. It treats low platelet counts in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who have not responded sufficiently to a previous treatment. It works by blocking an enzyme called spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK), helping reduce the destruction of platelets caused by antibodies.

Side effects

Common side effects include diarrhea, high blood pressure, nausea, respiratory infections, dizziness, increased liver enzymes on blood tests, rash, abdominal pain, tiredness, chest pain and low levels of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell). Potentially serious side effects include high blood pressure, liver injury, severe diarrhea and low neutrophil counts. Contact your doctor if you develop severe diarrhea or signs of infection, or if tests show high blood pressure, liver problems or low neutrophil counts. Blood pressure checks and blood tests are needed to monitor these risks. Your prescriber may need to interrupt, reduce or stop treatment. Tavalisse can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception and contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The supplied FDA label lists no contraindications for Tavalisse. However, it can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception during treatment, and do not breastfeed. Tavalisse requires monitoring for high blood pressure, liver injury and low neutrophil counts, which may increase infection risk. Blood pressure should be checked every two weeks until stable, then monthly. Liver function and neutrophil counts should be checked monthly, with monitoring for infection. Diarrhea may also occur and can become severe. These problems may require your prescriber to adjust, interrupt or stop treatment.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors can increase exposure to R406, the main active metabolite of Tavalisse. Taking Tavalisse with strong CYP3A4 inducers is not recommended. Ask your doctor whether any of your medicines fall into these groups.

Storage
