About Targretin
Overview
Targretin is a prescription medicine containing bexarotene, a retinoid applied to the skin. It treats skin lesions caused by cutaneous T-cell lymphoma when other treatments have not worked or cannot be tolerated. It works by activating specific receptors in cells that help control cell growth and development.
What it treats
Skin lesions in early-stage cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) when other treatments have not worked or cannot be tolerated.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include redness, itching, rash, burning, irritation, pain and peeling of the skin where Targretin is applied. Contact a doctor if skin irritation becomes severe or persistent, or if you develop blistering, open sores or marked swelling. Seek urgent medical attention for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as widespread hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Targretin during pregnancy or if you are allergic to bexarotene or any of its ingredients. Bexarotene can harm an unborn baby. People who could become pregnant need pregnancy testing and effective contraception before, during and after treatment, as directed by their prescriber. Use requires caution if you have previously had an allergic reaction to another retinoid. If you are breastfeeding, discuss whether to stop breastfeeding or avoid treatment with your prescriber. Avoid excessive sunlight and sunlamps during treatment, as skin may become more sensitive to sunlight. Discuss vitamin A supplements with your prescriber, and do not use insect repellents containing DEET while using Targretin.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements and skin products you use. Important interactions to discuss include: • Vitamin A supplements and other retinoid medicines, which may increase the risk of vitamin A–related side effects. • Ketoconazole, itraconazole and erythromycin, which may slow the breakdown of bexarotene and increase exposure. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may have a similar effect. • Insect repellents containing DEET. Avoid these during treatment because bexarotene may increase the risk of DEET toxicity. Check with your doctor before applying other medicated products to the same skin areas, as these may worsen irritation.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C with the cap closed, away from direct light and heat. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
