About Synagis
Overview
Synagis (palivizumab) is a monoclonal antibody medicine used to prevent serious lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in certain infants and young children. Eligible children include those born at or before 35 weeks of pregnancy who are 6 months or younger at the start of RSV season, and those 24 months or younger with bronchopulmonary dysplasia requiring medical treatment in the previous 6 months or congenital heart disease that significantly affects blood flow. It works by targeting the RSV F protein to inhibit the virus. Its safety and effectiveness for treating RSV disease have not been established.
What it treats
Synagis (palivizumab) is used to prevent serious lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children who, at the start of RSV season: - Are 6 months old or younger and were born at or before 35 weeks of pregnancy. - Are 24 months old or younger and have bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) that required medical treatment within the previous 6 months. - Are 24 months old or younger and have congenital heart disease that significantly affects blood flow. Its safety and effectiveness for treating RSV disease have not been established.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include fever and rash. Serious reactions include anaphylaxis, anaphylactic shock and other severe, sudden allergic reactions. Fatal cases have been reported. Seek emergency medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Synagis must be permanently stopped if such a reaction occurs.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Synagis must not be given to children who have previously had a significant allergic reaction to it. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock, have been reported, including fatal cases. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, Synagis must be permanently stopped and appropriate treatment given. Use caution in children with low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) or any blood-clotting disorder because Synagis is injected into a muscle. Palivizumab may interfere with some RSV diagnostic tests, including certain antigen detection tests. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children older than 24 months when treatment begins.
Interactions
No formal drug interaction studies have been conducted with Synagis. In one clinical trial, no additional increase in adverse reactions was observed in children receiving routine childhood vaccines, influenza vaccine, bronchodilators or corticosteroids alongside Synagis.
