About Sunlenca

Overview

Sunlenca contains lenacapavir, an antiretroviral medicine for HIV-1. It is used with other antiretrovirals in adults who have had extensive prior treatment and whose current regimen is failing because of drug resistance, intolerance or safety concerns. Sunlenca tablets are also used as an initial component when starting BIXLENVO in adults whose HIV-1 is suppressed on stable treatment and who have no known or suspected resistance to either BIXLENVO component. Lenacapavir works by inhibiting the HIV-1 capsid.

What it treats

- HIV-1 infection in adults with extensive previous treatment and multidrug-resistant HIV-1 whose current treatment is failing because of resistance, intolerance or safety concerns. Sunlenca is used with other antiretroviral medicines. - HIV-1 infection in adults starting BIXLENVO to replace a stable treatment regimen that has suppressed the virus, with no known or suspected resistance to either BIXLENVO component. Sunlenca tablets are used for oral loading as part of starting BIXLENVO.

Safety information

Side effects

The most common side effects of Sunlenca are nausea and reactions at the injection site. Lumps and areas of hardened skin at the injection site may persist. Contact your doctor if you develop an injection site reaction, particularly one that is severe or persistent. Serious injection site reactions have been associated with injection into the skin rather than under it. Immune reconstitution syndrome is also a potential risk and may require further medical evaluation and treatment. Sunlenca can increase the risk of side effects from certain other medicines, including those started within 9 months after the last injection. Tell your doctor about any new medicines during this period.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for a severe reaction where the injection was given. - Contact your doctor about lumps or hardened areas at the injection site that do not go away.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Sunlenca with medicines that strongly increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A (strong CYP3A inducers). These can lower lenacapavir levels, making treatment less effective and allowing resistance to develop. Conditions requiring caution include immune reconstitution syndrome, an immune-system reaction that may need further assessment and treatment. Lenacapavir can remain in the body for 12 months or longer. Not following the prescribed treatment plan can lead to loss of viral control and resistance. Stopping treatment requires a prescriber-managed plan for alternative HIV treatment. Sunlenca may increase the levels and side effects of certain medicines processed mainly by CYP3A, including medicines started within nine months after the last injection. Tell your prescriber about all medicines you take or plan to start. Injection-site reactions can occur, including lumps and hardened areas that may persist. Incorrect injection into the skin rather than under it has been associated with serious injection-site reactions.
