Severe acute exacerbations of hepatitis B virus (HBV) have been reported in patients who are coinfected with HIV-1 and HBV and have discontinued products containing emtricitabine (FTC) and/or tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), which are components of efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 40 kg, when efavirenz is used in combination with emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

Side effects
In a clinical trial of efavirenz taken with emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, common side effects included diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness, headache, dizziness, depression, difficulty sleeping, unusual dreams and rash. These findings are from combination treatment, not Stocrin alone. Seek immediate medical evaluation for serious mental health symptoms. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop a severe rash or seizures. The label directs that treatment be stopped if a severe rash develops. Other serious risks listed for the combination include liver damage or failure, new or worsening kidney problems, loss of bone density, and a build-up of lactic acid in the blood with severe liver enlargement and fat accumulation. The label also warns about severe worsening of hepatitis B in people who have both HIV-1 and hepatitis B, and immune system changes that may require further evaluation and treatment. Discuss these risks with your doctor. Changes in the amount or distribution of body fat have also been reported with antiretroviral treatment.
