About Silvadene
Overview
Silvadene is a cream containing silver sulfadiazine, an antimicrobial medicine. It is used alongside other care to help prevent and treat wound infections in people with second- and third-degree burns. It works by acting against microbes in the burn wound.

Safety information
Side effects
Infrequently reported side effects include burning, rash and skin discoloration. The label does not identify any side effects as common. Contact your doctor if you develop or are found to have any of these reported serious effects: • A temporary decrease in white blood cells, mainly neutrophils. This has been reported more often when silver sulfadiazine is used with cimetidine. • Skin tissue death (necrosis) or a skin reaction called erythema multiforme. • Kidney inflammation (interstitial nephritis). The label also reports delayed separation of dead burn tissue after topical antibacterial treatment. In some cases, a surgical procedure was needed to prevent tightening of the affected tissue.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Silvadene if you are allergic to silver sulfadiazine or any other ingredient in the cream. Silvadene must not be used during pregnancy near or at term, in premature infants, or in newborns during the first two months of life. Sulfonamide medicines can increase the risk of kernicterus, a form of brain damage caused by bilirubin buildup.

Storage
Store below 25°C with the cap closed, away from direct light and heat. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
