In patients with chronic hepatitis C, eltrombopag tablets in combination with interferon and ribavirin may increase the risk of hepatic decompensation.
Eltrombopag tablets may increase the risk of severe and potentially life-threatening hepatotoxicity. Monitor hepatic function and discontinue dosing as recommended.
About Revolade
Overview
Revolade contains eltrombopag and is a prescription medicine supplied as tablets. It treats low platelet counts in adults and children aged 1 year and older with persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) when previous treatments have not worked well enough and there is an increased risk of bleeding, or in people with chronic hepatitis C when low platelet counts prevent or limit interferon-based treatment. It also treats severe aplastic anemia, either alongside standard immune-suppressing treatment as initial therapy in adults and children aged 2 years and older, or after an insufficient response to immune-suppressing treatment. It works by activating receptors that stimulate the development of platelet-producing cells, increasing platelet production.
What it treats
• Persistent or chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adults and children aged 1 year and older when corticosteroids, immunoglobulins or spleen removal have not worked well enough, and low platelet levels and the patient’s condition increase bleeding risk. • Low platelet counts in people with chronic hepatitis C when these prevent starting or continuing interferon-based treatment. • Severe aplastic anemia in adults and children aged 2 years and older, as initial treatment together with standard immune-suppressing therapy. • Severe aplastic anemia that has not responded well enough to immune-suppressing therapy.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include anemia (low red blood cell count), nausea, fever, increased levels of the liver enzyme ALT, cough, tiredness, headache and diarrhea. Serious risks that warrant contacting a doctor include liver injury, worsening liver function in people with chronic hepatitis C, blood clots and cataracts. Clots in the vein supplying the liver have been reported in people with chronic liver disease. In people with myelodysplastic syndromes, eltrombopag is associated with an increased risk of death and progression to acute myeloid leukemia. Liver function should be checked before and during treatment, and platelet counts should be monitored regularly.

Before taking this medicine
The label lists no formal contraindications to eltrombopag. Liver toxicity is a warning; liver function should be checked before and during treatment. Blood clots, including clots in the portal vein, have been reported in people with chronic liver disease taking eltrombopag. Platelet counts should be monitored regularly. The label also warns of an increased risk of death and progression to acute myeloid leukemia in people with myelodysplastic syndromes. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
