About Reblozyl
Overview
Reblozyl (luspatercept) is a prescription medicine supplied as a powder in a vial for preparation and injection under the skin. It treats anemia in adults with beta thalassemia who need regular red blood cell transfusions, and in adults with very low- to intermediate-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) who have not previously used an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) and may need regular transfusions. It also treats anemia after an ESA has failed in adults who require at least 2 red blood cell units over 8 weeks and have very low- to intermediate-risk MDS with ring sideroblasts, or myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm with ring sideroblasts and thrombocytosis. It works by reducing signals that limit red blood cell maturation, helping the body produce more red blood cells.
What it treats
- Anemia in adults with beta thalassemia who need regular red blood cell transfusions. - Anemia in adults with very low- to intermediate-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) who have not previously received an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) and may need regular red blood cell transfusions. - Anemia that has not responded to an ESA and requires at least 2 units of red blood cells over 8 weeks in adults with very low- to intermediate-risk MDS with ring sideroblasts, or myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm with ring sideroblasts and thrombocytosis. Reblozyl is not a substitute for red blood cell transfusions when anemia needs immediate correction.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include tiredness, headache, muscle and bone pain, joint pain, dizziness or a spinning sensation, nausea, diarrhea, cough, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the hands or feet, high blood pressure, and allergic reactions. COVID-19 was also reported among common adverse reactions. Serious risks that warrant contacting a doctor include blood clots, high blood pressure, allergic reactions, and masses of blood-forming tissue outside the bone marrow. The risks of blood clots and these tissue masses are increased in patients with beta thalassemia. Blood pressure should be monitored during treatment. Reblozyl may harm an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. Those who could become pregnant should use effective contraception.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications for Reblozyl. However, certain conditions require caution: In people with beta thalassemia, Reblozyl increases the risk of blood clots and masses of blood-forming tissue outside the bone marrow, called extramedullary hematopoietic (EMH) masses. Monitoring is needed for signs, symptoms and complications. Blood clots require prompt treatment, and Reblozyl must be stopped if EMH masses cause serious complications. Blood pressure should be monitored during treatment. Medicine to lower blood pressure may be needed. Reblozyl may harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
