About Razadyne

Overview

Razadyne contains galantamine hydrobromide, a medicine in the cholinesterase inhibitor group. It is used to treat mild to moderate dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It is thought to work by slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical that helps nerve cells communicate. There is no evidence that galantamine changes the course of the underlying disease.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache and decreased appetite. Serious side effects include severe skin reactions, a slow heartbeat or problems with the heart’s electrical conduction, gastrointestinal bleeding that may not be obvious, difficulty emptying the bladder, and breathing problems, especially in people with a history of severe asthma or obstructive lung disease. Stop taking galantamine at the first sign of a skin rash and contact a doctor. Seek medical advice promptly for other serious side effects. The label also reports deaths in people with mild cognitive impairment.

When to call your doctor

- A skin rash: stop taking galantamine and seek medical attention immediately. - A slow heartbeat: seek medical attention immediately. - Difficulty passing urine: seek medical attention immediately. - Trouble breathing, especially if you have severe asthma or obstructive lung disease: seek medical attention immediately.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Razadyne if you are allergic to galantamine hydrobromide or any of its other ingredients. Serious skin reactions can occur. Stop taking it at the first sign of a skin rash. All patients may be at risk of a slow heartbeat or problems with the heart’s electrical conduction, including atrioventricular (AV) block. Monitoring for gastrointestinal bleeding is needed, especially in people at increased risk of ulcers. Galantamine may also obstruct urine flow from the bladder. People with a history of severe asthma or obstructive lung disease need monitoring for breathing-related adverse effects. During pregnancy, galantamine may harm the unborn baby, based on animal studies.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take anticholinergic medicines, as galantamine may interfere with their effects. Galantamine may also increase the combined effects of other cholinesterase inhibitors, cholinergic agonists, succinylcholine or similar medicines that block nerve signals to muscles. If you are having a procedure, make sure the doctor knows you take galantamine.

Storage
