About Leqembi
Overview
Leqembi (lecanemab) is a monoclonal antibody medicine used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment should begin in people with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. It targets amyloid beta, a protein that builds up in the brain, and reduces amyloid beta plaques.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include infusion-related reactions, headache, and amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), which can involve small bleeds, swelling or fluid buildup in the brain. ARIA, allergic reactions and infusion-related reactions can be serious. Contact your doctor promptly if you suspect a reaction. Symptoms suggesting ARIA need medical evaluation, which may include an MRI scan. Closer monitoring for ARIA is recommended during the first 14 weeks of treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Leqembi if you have had a serious allergic reaction to lecanemab or any of its ingredients. Reactions have included angioedema (swelling beneath the skin) and anaphylaxis. Leqembi requires careful monitoring for amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), particularly during the first 14 weeks of treatment. The risk, including ARIA that causes symptoms, is higher in people with two copies of the apolipoprotein E ε4 gene variant. Small brain bleeds or superficial siderosis (iron deposits on the brain’s surface) present before treatment also increase the risk. Symptoms suggesting ARIA require clinical assessment, which may include an MRI scan. Infusion-related reactions can occur. If a reaction develops, the healthcare team may slow or stop the infusion and provide treatment. Medicines to help prevent reactions may be considered before later infusions.
