About Proleukin
Overview
Proleukin contains aldesleukin, a laboratory-made form of the immune system protein interleukin-2. It is used to treat adults with renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer, or melanoma that has spread to other parts of the body. It stimulates the growth and activity of certain immune cells, although how it acts against cancer is not fully understood.
What it treats
- Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer that has spread) in adults. - Metastatic melanoma (melanoma that has spread) in adults.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects, reported in at least 30% of patients, include low blood pressure, increased bilirubin levels in the blood, shortness of breath, rash, diarrhea, reduced urine output, chills, vomiting, low platelet counts, nausea, confusion and increased creatinine levels in the blood. Contact a doctor promptly about serious side effects, including capillary leak syndrome, effects on the nervous system, serious infections including sepsis, kidney toxicity, severe allergic reactions and infusion-related reactions. Serious complications associated with increased eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, can also occur. Proleukin may cause new autoimmune or inflammatory disorders or worsen existing autoimmune disease. These reactions can affect any organ or tissue. It may also increase the risk of transplant rejection. Kidney function must be monitored before and throughout treatment. Proleukin may harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception.

Before taking this medicine
Proleukin must not be used in people who have had a severe allergic reaction to aldesleukin or any ingredient in the medicine, have an organ transplant, or have significant heart, lung, kidney, liver or central nervous system impairment. Kidney function must be checked before and during treatment. Treatment may need to be withheld or permanently stopped if kidney toxicity occurs. Proleukin can worsen existing autoimmune disease or cause new autoimmune or inflammatory disorders. It may also increase the risk of organ transplant rejection. A severe allergic reaction requires permanent discontinuation. Proleukin may harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
