About Precose
Overview
Precose is a prescription tablet containing acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates in the intestine, delaying glucose absorption and reducing the rise in blood sugar after meals.

Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Precose (acarbose) if you are allergic to it or have any of the following: - Diabetic ketoacidosis. - Cirrhosis. - Inflammatory bowel disease or ulcers in the colon. - A partial intestinal blockage or a condition that puts you at risk of intestinal blockage. - A chronic intestinal disease that seriously affects digestion or nutrient absorption. - Any condition that could worsen because of increased gas in the intestines.
Interactions
Some medicines can raise blood sugar and make it harder to control while taking Precose. These include thiazides and other diuretics, corticosteroids, phenothiazines, thyroid medicines, estrogens, oral contraceptives, phenytoin, nicotinic acid, sympathomimetics, calcium channel blockers and isoniazid. Close blood sugar monitoring is needed when these medicines are started. If they are stopped while you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea, monitoring for low blood sugar is needed. Taking Precose with insulin or a sulfonylurea may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Very rarely, hypoglycemic shock has been reported with these combinations. Your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment if low blood sugar occurs. Intestinal adsorbents such as charcoal, and digestive enzyme products containing amylase or pancreatin, may reduce the effect of Precose and should not be taken with it. Precose can change how much digoxin is available to your body. Tell your doctor if you take digoxin, as your prescription may need adjustment.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
