About Prandin

Overview

Prandin (repaglinide) is a prescription tablet used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. It works by helping the pancreas release insulin to lower blood sugar. It should not be used for type 1 diabetes or to treat diabetic ketoacidosis.

Side effects

Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), upper respiratory infection, headache, sinusitis, joint pain, nausea, diarrhea and back pain. Low blood sugar can be serious. Contact your doctor if it occurs. Serious heart and blood vessel reactions are also a concern when Prandin is used with NPH insulin. Prandin is not indicated for use with NPH insulin; contact your doctor if you are using both.

When to call your doctor

• Seek medical attention immediately if you experience low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Prandin if you take gemfibrozil or are allergic to repaglinide or any of its inactive ingredients. Prandin can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Skipping a meal increases this risk. Any dose changes should be directed by your prescriber. Prandin is not indicated for use with NPH insulin because of the risk of serious cardiovascular adverse reactions. Clinical studies have not established that Prandin reduces the risk of major blood vessel complications. If you are breastfeeding, either Prandin or breastfeeding must be stopped. Discuss this with your prescriber.

Interactions

Avoid taking Prandin with clopidogrel. If they must be used together, your prescriber will need to adjust your Prandin dose. Taking Prandin with cyclosporine requires a dose limit and more frequent blood glucose monitoring. Medicines that affect the CYP2C8 or CYP3A4 enzymes can change how Prandin works. Inhibitors of these enzymes, and other medicines that increase the risk of low blood sugar, may require a lower Prandin dose. Enzyme inducers, and other medicines that reduce Prandin’s blood sugar-lowering effect, may require a higher dose. Your prescriber may also recommend more frequent blood glucose checks. Some medicines can mask the warning signs of low blood sugar. Tell your doctor about the medicines you take so they can decide whether dose changes or extra monitoring are needed. Do not change your dose yourself.

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
