About Paraplatin
Overview
Paraplatin contains carboplatin, a prescription platinum-based cancer medicine given by intravenous infusion. It is used with other cancer medicines for the initial treatment of adults with advanced ovarian cancer. It is also used on its own for ovarian cancer that has returned after previous chemotherapy. Carboplatin forms links within DNA that interfere with cells’ ability to copy and use their DNA, leading to cell death.
What it treats

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of carboplatin include nausea and vomiting, low red blood cell counts (anemia), low white blood cell counts and low platelets. Blood tests may also show low mineral levels or raised liver enzymes. Hair loss, weakness, pain and digestive problems are common when carboplatin is used with cyclophosphamide. Side effects vary with the treatment combination. Contact your doctor immediately for signs of infection, fever, unusual bleeding or bruising. Carboplatin can severely reduce blood cell counts, causing infections or bleeding that may be fatal. Blood counts are checked before each treatment cycle and as needed. People with impaired kidney function have a higher risk of severe blood cell reductions. Seek immediate medical help for an allergic reaction, including rash, hives, itching, wheezing or breathing difficulty. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur within minutes of administration and during any treatment cycle. Contact your doctor promptly for new or worsening tingling or other changes in sensation, severe or persistent nausea and vomiting, or redness, pain or swelling at the injection site. Nerve damage can occur, and injection-site reactions may involve tissue damage. Other serious reactions reported after carboplatin use include severe infection or septic shock, acute kidney injury, heart failure, stroke, blood clots and secondary acute myeloid leukemia. The frequency of these reactions and whether carboplatin caused them cannot always be established.

Interactions
Avoid using carboplatin with aminoglycoside antibiotics, as this combination increases the risk of kidney damage and hearing-related toxicity. Tell your doctor if you are taking an aminoglycoside antibiotic.
