About Ozurdex
Overview
Ozurdex is a prescription medicine containing dexamethasone, a corticosteroid used to treat certain eye conditions. It treats macular oedema (swelling in the central part of the retina) associated with diabetes or a blocked retinal vein, as well as non-infectious uveitis affecting the back of the eye. It works by reducing inflammation and fluid leakage in the eye, helping to reduce swelling.
What it treats
Macular edema (swelling in the central retina) following a branch or central retinal vein occlusion. Diabetic macular edema. Non-infectious uveitis (inflammation) affecting the back of the eye.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include increased pressure inside the eye, cataracts, eye pain, blurred vision, small spots drifting across your vision (floaters), and bleeding on the surface of the eye. Serious side effects include infection inside the eye, retinal detachment and glaucoma, which can damage vision. Contact a doctor urgently if you develop severe or worsening eye pain, increasing redness, sensitivity to light, sudden changes in vision, flashes of light, new or increasing floaters, or a shadow across your vision. Increased eye pressure may cause no symptoms, so follow-up eye checks are important.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Ozurdex must not be used in people who are allergic to dexamethasone or any of its other ingredients. It is contraindicated in active or suspected infections in or around the eye, including viral, fungal and mycobacterial infections; advanced glaucoma; or a torn or ruptured posterior lens capsule, the membrane behind the eye’s natural lens. Particular caution is needed in people with raised eye pressure, glaucoma or a history of herpes simplex infection of the eye. Treatment can increase eye pressure, contribute to cataracts and mask or worsen infections. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding requires careful assessment of the benefits and risks.
Interactions
Tell your eye specialist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter treatments and supplements you use, including other steroid medicines and eye treatments. Medicines such as ritonavir and cobicistat can increase corticosteroid effects and side effects. Systemic exposure to dexamethasone from Ozurdex is low, but your doctor should still review these combinations. Also mention anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines, as these may increase bleeding around the injection procedure. Do not stop them without medical advice. No specific food or supplement interactions are established for Ozurdex.
