About Opdualag

Overview

Opdualag is a prescription medicine containing two monoclonal antibodies, nivolumab and relatlimab, supplied in a vial for intravenous use. It treats melanoma that cannot be removed by surgery or has spread to other parts of the body in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It works by blocking two proteins, PD-1 and LAG-3, that limit immune-cell activity, helping the immune system respond to cancer.

Side effects

Common side effects of Opdualag include muscle, bone or joint pain, tiredness, rash, itching and diarrhea. Common blood test changes include low hemoglobin, low lymphocyte counts (a type of white blood cell), increased liver enzymes and low sodium. Contact your doctor promptly about suspected serious side effects. Opdualag can cause immune-related reactions in any organ or tissue that may be severe or fatal. These include inflammation of the lungs, bowel, liver, kidneys or heart, as well as hormone gland problems and skin reactions. Blood tests are needed before and during treatment to check liver, kidney and thyroid function. Reactions can also occur during an infusion; tell your healthcare team immediately if you experience a reaction. Serious or fatal complications can occur in people who receive a stem cell transplant from a donor before or after treatment. Opdualag can harm an unborn baby. If you can become pregnant, use effective contraception and contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The FDA label lists no contraindications for Opdualag. However, it can cause severe or fatal immune-related reactions affecting any organ or tissue, including the lungs, bowel, liver, hormone-producing glands, skin, kidneys and heart. Monitoring includes liver enzymes, kidney function and thyroid function before and during treatment. Treatment may need to be paused or permanently stopped depending on the reaction. Infusion-related reactions may require slowing, interrupting or permanently stopping treatment. Serious or fatal complications can occur in people who receive a donor stem cell transplant before or after treatment with a PD-1/PD-L1-blocking antibody. Opdualag can harm an unborn baby. People who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
