About Onglyza

Overview

Onglyza is a prescription tablet containing saxagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It works by slowing the breakdown of hormones released after meals that help the body release insulin and reduce sugar production by the liver. It should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What it treats

- Type 2 diabetes in adults, alongside diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and headache. Swelling of the limbs was reported more often when Onglyza was taken with a thiazolidinedione (TZD). Low blood sugar was reported more often when Onglyza was added to insulin or a sulfonylurea. Hives and facial swelling were also reported. Serious side effects include acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema (swelling beneath the skin) and skin conditions involving peeling. Stop taking Onglyza and seek urgent medical attention if pancreatitis or a serious allergic reaction is suspected. Contact your doctor if you experience low blood sugar, particularly when taking Onglyza with insulin or a sulfonylurea.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for hives or swelling of the face, which may indicate an allergic reaction. - Seek medical attention immediately for peeling skin, which may indicate a serious skin reaction.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Onglyza if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to it, including anaphylaxis, swelling beneath the skin (angioedema), or severe skin peeling. Acute inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) has been reported. Onglyza should be stopped promptly if pancreatitis is suspected or a serious allergic reaction occurs. Taking Onglyza with insulin or a sulfonylurea increases the risk of low blood sugar. Your prescriber may need to adjust these other medicines. There are no adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children and adolescents under 18.

Interactions

Strong CYP3A4/5 inhibitors, such as ketoconazole, can significantly increase the amount of saxagliptin in your blood. Tell your doctor if you take these medicines, as your Onglyza dose may need to be adjusted.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
