Drugs with thyroid hormone activity, alone or together with other therapeutic agents, have been used for the treatment of obesity. In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or even life-threatening manifestations of toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects.
About NP Thyroid
Overview
NP Thyroid is an oral tablet made from porcine (pig) thyroid glands and contains the thyroid hormones levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3). It is used to replace or supplement thyroid hormones in people with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), except temporary hypothyroidism during recovery from subacute thyroiditis. It is also used to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the treatment or prevention of certain goiters and in thyroid cancer management. It works by supplying thyroid hormones or suppressing TSH, depending on the condition being treated.
What it treats
- Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), as replacement or supplemental thyroid hormone therapy, except temporary hypothyroidism during recovery from subacute thyroiditis. - Certain goiters (enlarged thyroid glands) with normal thyroid function, including thyroid nodules, multinodular goiter, and goiters associated with subacute or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s), by suppressing thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). - Thyroid cancer management, by suppressing TSH.

Side effects
Side effects may include signs of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) if too much medicine is taken, either when treatment begins or during ongoing treatment. The label states that other adverse reactions are rare but does not list specific symptoms or identify which require contacting a doctor.

Before taking this medicine
NP Thyroid should generally not be taken by people with diagnosed adrenal insufficiency that has not yet been corrected, untreated thyrotoxicosis (excess thyroid hormone), or known or suspected hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients. The label notes that true allergic or unusual individual reactions to thyroid hormone itself are not well documented.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: • Oral anticoagulants (blood thinners): Starting NP Thyroid may increase their effects. Close monitoring is needed, and your prescriber may need to adjust your blood thinner treatment. • Insulin or oral diabetes medicines: Starting NP Thyroid may increase your need for these medicines. Close monitoring is needed when thyroid treatment begins. • Cholestyramine or colestipol: These medicines bind thyroid hormones in the intestine and reduce their absorption. Ask your doctor how to separate them from NP Thyroid. • Estrogens or estrogen-containing birth control pills: These may change your thyroid hormone requirements, particularly if your thyroid gland does not function. Your prescriber may need to adjust your thyroid treatment.
Using NP Thyroid
Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
