About Novolog Mix 70/30
Overview
Novolog Mix 70/30 is a prescription insulin medicine supplied in a prefilled pen, combining intermediate-acting insulin aspart protamine and rapid-acting insulin aspart. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with diabetes. It lowers blood sugar by helping muscle and fat cells take up glucose and reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver. It is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use NovoLog Mix 70/30 during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or if you are allergic to this medicine or any of its ingredients. Low blood sugar can be life-threatening. More frequent blood glucose checks are needed when your insulin regimen, other blood sugar-lowering medicines, meal pattern or physical activity changes. Extra monitoring is also needed if you have kidney or liver problems, or do not recognise the warning signs of low blood sugar. Changes to your insulin regimen should be made only under close medical supervision. Caution is needed if you are at risk of low potassium, which can be life-threatening; potassium levels may need monitoring. Taking this medicine with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure, so monitoring for signs of heart failure is needed. Severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening anaphylaxis, may occur. Stop using the medicine and seek urgent medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Never share your pen with anyone, even if the needle is changed. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid mix-ups.
Interactions
NovoLog Mix 70/30 can interact with other medicines and alcohol, affecting blood sugar levels or making low blood sugar harder to notice. Medicines that may increase the risk of low blood sugar include other diabetes medicines, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, disopyramide, fibrates, fluoxetine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, pentoxifylline, pramlintide, salicylates, somatostatin analogues such as octreotide, and sulfonamide antibiotics. Medicines that may reduce its blood sugar-lowering effect include atypical antipsychotics such as olanzapine and clozapine, corticosteroids, danazol, diuretics, estrogens, progestogens, oral contraceptives, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, phenothiazines, protease inhibitors, somatropin, thyroid hormones, and sympathomimetic medicines such as albuterol, epinephrine and terbutaline. Alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine and lithium salts may either increase or decrease its blood sugar-lowering effect. Pentamidine may cause low blood sugar, sometimes followed by high blood sugar. Beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine may make the warning signs of low blood sugar less noticeable. Discuss these interactions with your doctor. More frequent blood sugar checks may be needed, and your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment.
Using Novolog Mix 70/30
Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
