About Nexavar
Overview
Nexavar contains sorafenib, a kinase inhibitor supplied as film-coated tablets. It is used to treat liver cancer called hepatocellular carcinoma that cannot be removed by surgery, and advanced kidney cancer called renal cell carcinoma. It also treats differentiated thyroid cancer that has returned locally or spread, is progressing, and no longer responds to radioactive iodine treatment. It works by blocking several enzymes involved in signals that help cancer cells grow and form blood vessels.
What it treats
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) that cannot be removed by surgery. - Advanced renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). - Differentiated thyroid cancer that has returned locally or spread to other parts of the body, is progressing, and does not respond to radioactive iodine treatment.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Nexavar include diarrhea, tiredness, infections, hair loss, hand-foot skin reactions, rash, weight loss, reduced appetite, nausea, digestive tract or abdominal pain, high blood pressure and bleeding. Contact your doctor promptly about bleeding, heart or circulation problems, severe or persistent high blood pressure, severe or persistent skin reactions, or wound-healing problems. Serious risks also include a hole in the stomach or intestine, changes in the heart’s electrical activity (QT prolongation), and liver injury. Severe skin reactions include Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Your doctor should monitor your blood pressure and liver function. Heart tracing (ECG) and blood electrolyte monitoring may be needed if you are at increased risk of serious heart rhythm problems. In people with thyroid cancer, Nexavar can interfere with suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), so monthly TSH monitoring and adjustment of thyroid replacement treatment may be needed. Nexavar may harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception and contact your doctor if you become pregnant.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Nexavar if you have a known severe allergy to sorafenib or any other ingredient in the medicine. Nexavar must not be used with carboplatin and paclitaxel in patients with squamous cell lung cancer. Conditions requiring caution include heart or blood vessel problems, bleeding, high blood pressure, serious skin reactions, a hole in the stomach or bowel, impaired wound healing, heart rhythm problems such as QT prolongation, and liver injury. These may require monitoring, treatment interruption or permanent discontinuation. Tell your prescriber if you are planning surgery. Blood pressure should be checked weekly during the first six weeks and periodically afterwards. Liver function tests should be monitored regularly. Patients at increased risk of serious heart rhythm problems need ECG and electrolyte monitoring. Patients with differentiated thyroid cancer need monthly thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) checks and may need their thyroid replacement treatment adjusted. Nexavar may harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception during treatment and discuss pregnancy with your prescriber. Do not breastfeed while taking Nexavar.
Interactions
Avoid taking Nexavar with medicines that strongly increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4 (called strong CYP3A4 inducers). Ask your doctor whether any medicines you take fall into this group.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
