About Navelbine
Overview
Navelbine is a prescription chemotherapy medicine containing vinorelbine as vinorelbine tartrate. It is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer and, in some treatment settings, advanced breast cancer. It works by disrupting structures that cells need to divide, helping to slow or stop cancer cell growth.

Advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, mouth sores, loss of appetite, hair loss and tiredness. Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet can also occur. Vinorelbine commonly lowers white blood cell counts, increasing the risk of serious infection. It can also cause anaemia, which may lead to tiredness and breathlessness. Contact a doctor immediately for fever, chills or other signs of infection; unusual bruising or bleeding; severe constipation or abdominal pain; persistent vomiting or diarrhoea; or new or worsening breathlessness. Severe constipation with vomiting or an inability to pass stools or wind may indicate a blocked bowel. Seek emergency medical help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, or signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Navelbine must not be used in people who are allergic to vinorelbine, other vinca alkaloids or any of its ingredients. It must not be used in people with very low white blood cell or platelet counts, or a severe current or recent infection. Breastfeeding must be stopped before treatment. Yellow fever vaccination must not be given during treatment. Vinorelbine can harm an unborn baby and should generally be avoided during pregnancy. Liver disease, a history of heart disease, previous radiotherapy and other treatments that suppress bone marrow require careful assessment. For capsules, conditions that significantly affect medicine absorption, or previous major surgery to the stomach or small bowel, may prevent use. Other live vaccines and medicines that affect vinorelbine breakdown require review by the prescriber.
Interactions
Vinorelbine can interact with medicines that affect how it is broken down. Tell your doctor if you take antifungals such as itraconazole or ketoconazole, antibiotics such as clarithromycin or rifampicin, HIV medicines such as ritonavir, or epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine or phenytoin. These combinations may change vinorelbine levels or affect seizure control. Also discuss St John’s wort and grapefruit or grapefruit juice, which can affect vinorelbine levels. Other cancer treatments and medicines that suppress bone marrow or the immune system may increase the risk of low blood cell counts, infection or other side effects. Your doctor also needs to know about ciclosporin or tacrolimus. Live vaccines, including yellow fever vaccine, can cause serious infection during treatment. Check with your cancer team before any vaccination. If you take warfarin or another oral anticoagulant, closer blood-clotting monitoring may be needed. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements before starting or stopping them.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
