About Mycobutin
Overview
Mycobutin capsules contain rifabutin, an antibiotic. This medicine is used to prevent widespread Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in people with advanced HIV infection. Rifabutin works against mycobacteria, the bacteria that cause MAC disease.
What it treats
- Prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in people with advanced HIV infection.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include discoloured urine, rash, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, belching, gas, vomiting and changes in taste. Headache, reduced appetite, muscle pain, weakness, fever and difficulty sleeping were also reported. Low levels of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell (neutropenia), were also reported. Contact your doctor if you are told you have neutropenia, develop a rash or have digestive symptoms that are difficult to tolerate. Neutropenia, rash and digestive intolerance were the main reasons patients stopped treatment because of side effects in the trials.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Mycobutin if you have had a clinically significant allergic reaction to rifabutin or any other rifamycin antibiotic.
Interactions
Rifabutin can speed up the activity of certain liver enzymes (CYP450 IIIA), which may lower the levels of other medicines in your blood. Medicines that block these enzymes may increase rifabutin levels in your blood. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take so they can check for interactions.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
