About Mozobil
Overview
Mozobil (plerixafor) is a medicine that helps move blood-forming stem cells into the bloodstream. It is used with filgrastim in patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or multiple myeloma so these cells can be collected for a transplant using the patient’s own stem cells. It works by blocking a receptor that helps hold stem cells in the bone marrow, allowing them to move into the blood.
What it treats
Used with filgrastim to move blood-forming stem cells into the bloodstream for collection and later transplantation using the patient’s own cells in people with: - Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma - Multiple myeloma
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Mozobil include diarrhea, nausea, tiredness, injection-site reactions, headache, joint pain, dizziness and vomiting. Serious risks include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, increased white blood cell counts, decreased platelet counts, and an enlarged or ruptured spleen. Seek urgent medical help for a serious allergic reaction. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop pain in the upper left abdomen, shoulder blade or shoulder, as this may indicate a spleen problem. Monitoring is needed during and after administration, and blood cell and platelet counts should be checked during treatment. Mozobil may release tumor cells from the bone marrow when used with filgrastim; the effect of returning these cells to the body is unknown. It should not be used in people with leukemia because it may mobilize leukemia cells. Mozobil can harm an unborn baby; avoid becoming pregnant during treatment and contact your doctor if pregnancy occurs.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Mozobil if you have previously had an allergic reaction to plerixafor. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, have occurred. Patients should be monitored during and after administration. Mozobil should not be used in patients with leukemia because it may release leukemia cells into the blood. When used with filgrastim to mobilize blood-forming stem cells, it may also release tumor cells from the bone marrow. The effect of returning these tumor cells to the body is unknown. Mozobil can increase white blood cell counts and decrease platelet counts. Blood cell and platelet counts should be monitored during treatment. Report pain in the upper left abdomen, shoulder blade or shoulder promptly, as this requires assessment for possible rupture of the spleen. Mozobil can harm an unborn baby. Avoid becoming pregnant during treatment, and do not breastfeed while taking Mozobil.

Storage
