About Minocin
Overview
Minocin is a prescription antibiotic containing minocycline hydrochloride, a tetracycline derivative. It treats certain bacterial infections, including respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract and some sexually transmitted infections. It may also be used alongside other treatments for severe acne. It acts against bacteria that are susceptible to minocycline.
What it treats
Certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including respiratory, urinary tract, skin and eye infections, and some sexually transmitted infections. Rickettsial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus and Q fever; relapsing fever; and infections such as plague, tularemia and cholera. Brucellosis, used together with streptomycin. Certain infections when penicillin cannot be used, including gonorrhea, syphilis, yaws, listeriosis, anthrax and actinomycosis. Severe acne, as an additional treatment. Acute intestinal amebiasis, as an addition to medicines that treat the amebic infection. Elimination of meningococcal bacteria from the nose and throat in confirmed carriers without symptoms, reserved for situations with a high risk of meningococcal meningitis. It is not indicated to treat meningococcal infection.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, indigestion, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, a spinning sensation, sleepiness, itching and rash. The label does not give frequencies for most reactions. Other reported effects include mouth or tongue inflammation, difficulty swallowing, joint or muscle pain, hair loss, sun sensitivity, and discoloration of the skin, nails, teeth or mouth. Ringing in the ears and reduced hearing have also been reported. Contact a doctor promptly for severe or persistent diarrhea, painful swallowing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, breathing problems, unusual bruising or bleeding, or headache that may be associated with increased pressure around the brain. Serious reported reactions include inflammation or ulcers of the food pipe, severe bowel inflammation, pancreatitis, liver damage or failure, kidney inflammation or failure, blood cell disorders, seizures, and inflammation of the lungs or heart. Seek immediate medical help for a severe allergic reaction, including hives, swelling or difficulty breathing, or a severe blistering or peeling skin reaction. Some allergic reactions and cases of liver failure have been fatal. Stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical advice if symptoms suggest a serious hypersensitivity, lupus-like or serum sickness-like syndrome. These can involve fever, rash or hives, swollen glands, joint pain or swelling, and inflammation affecting internal organs. Deaths have been reported with these syndromes. Abnormal thyroid function and thyroid cancer have been reported with minocycline products. The label advises considering monitoring for signs of thyroid cancer during prolonged treatment. Sweet’s syndrome, an inflammatory skin reaction with fever, has also been reported after marketing; its frequency and causal relationship to minocycline are uncertain.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Minocin if you have had an allergic reaction to minocycline, any other tetracycline antibiotic, or any ingredient in the capsules.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take any of the following: - Anticoagulants (blood thinners): minocycline may affect blood clotting, and your doctor may need to adjust your anticoagulant treatment. - Penicillin: taking it with minocycline should be avoided because minocycline may interfere with its action. - Antacids containing aluminum, calcium or magnesium, or iron-containing products: these can reduce minocycline absorption. - Oral contraceptives: minocycline may make them less effective. - Isotretinoin: use should be avoided shortly before, during and shortly after minocycline treatment. Both medicines have been linked to increased pressure around the brain (pseudotumor cerebri). - Ergot alkaloids or their derivatives: taking these with minocycline increases the risk of ergot toxicity (ergotism).

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
