About Maxitrol
Overview
Maxitrol is an eye drop suspension containing dexamethasone, neomycin sulfate and polymyxin B sulfate. It is used for eye inflammation that responds to corticosteroids when a bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of one. Dexamethasone reduces swelling and inflammation, while neomycin and polymyxin B act against certain bacteria that cause eye infections.
What it treats
- Eye inflammation that responds to corticosteroids, when bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of infection. - Chronic anterior uveitis (inflammation in the front of the eye), when bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of infection. - Corneal injury caused by chemical, radiation or heat burns, or penetrating foreign bodies, when bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of infection.
Safety information
Side effects
Allergic reactions to the antibiotic ingredients are the most frequently reported side effects. The label does not provide exact rates. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include increased pressure inside the eye, which may lead to glaucoma and, infrequently, optic nerve damage; cataracts; delayed wound healing; and perforation of the eyeball. Inflammation of the cornea or conjunctiva, eye redness and corneal ulcers have also been reported. Other reported side effects include headache and Stevens–Johnson syndrome, a serious skin reaction. Cushing’s syndrome and reduced adrenal gland function may occur when dexamethasone is used beyond the prescribed dosing instructions in susceptible patients, including children and people taking medicines that inhibit the enzyme CYP3A4.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Maxitrol if you have most viral infections of the cornea or conjunctiva, including herpes simplex infection of the corneal surface (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia or chickenpox. It must also not be used for mycobacterial infections of the eye or fungal infections affecting eye structures. Do not use Maxitrol if you have a known or suspected allergy to any of its ingredients or to other corticosteroids.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C away from direct light. Once opened, follow the in-use period printed on the pack and do not let the dropper touch the eye or any surface. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
