About Lumigan
Overview
Lumigan is an eye drop solution containing bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog. It is used to lower raised pressure inside the eye in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is believed to work by increasing the drainage of fluid from the eye, which lowers eye pressure.
What it treats
- Open-angle glaucoma with elevated pressure inside the eye. - Ocular hypertension (elevated pressure inside the eye).
Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effect is eye redness, reported in 25%–45% of patients. Lumigan can also cause colour changes in the iris (the coloured part of the eye), eyelids and eyelashes. Iris colour changes are likely to be permanent. Eyelashes may gradually become longer, thicker or more numerous; these eyelash changes are usually reversible.
Before taking this medicine
Lumigan should not be used by anyone allergic to bimatoprost or any of its other ingredients. Use requires caution in people with active inflammation inside the eye, such as uveitis, or with macular oedema (swelling in the central part of the retina). Caution is also needed in people at increased risk of macular oedema, including those whose natural lens has been removed or whose lens capsule was damaged during cataract surgery. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding requires a prescriber’s assessment of the potential benefits and risks.
Using Lumigan
Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C away from direct light. Once opened, follow the in-use period printed on the pack and do not let the dropper touch the eye or any surface. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
