About Lonsurf
Overview
Lonsurf is a medicine containing trifluridine and tipiracil. It is used in adults with colorectal cancer that has spread, alone or with bevacizumab, after specified previous cancer treatments. It is also used for stomach cancer or cancer where the stomach meets the oesophagus that has spread, after at least two previous chemotherapy regimens that included specified treatments. Trifluridine interferes with cancer-cell DNA and cell multiplication, while tipiracil slows the breakdown of trifluridine.
What it treats
- Metastatic colorectal cancer in adults, used alone or with bevacizumab after previous fluoropyrimidine-, oxaliplatin- and irinotecan-based chemotherapy, anti-VEGF therapy and, if the cancer is RAS wild-type, anti-EGFR therapy. - Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the stomach or gastroesophageal junction in adults after at least two previous chemotherapy regimens that included a fluoropyrimidine, a platinum drug, either a taxane or irinotecan and, where appropriate, HER2/neu-targeted therapy.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Lonsurf include tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever. Blood tests may show low levels of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell), red blood cells (anemia) or platelets. When used with bevacizumab, common effects also include increased liver enzyme levels and low sodium levels. Lonsurf can cause severe bone marrow suppression, leading to seriously low blood cell counts. Contact your doctor if blood tests show low counts. Complete blood counts are needed before and on day 15 of each treatment cycle. Your doctor may need to interrupt or adjust treatment. Lonsurf can harm an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. If you could become pregnant, use effective contraception.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
The label lists no formal contraindications. However, Lonsurf should not be started in people with moderate or severe liver impairment. Severe kidney impairment requires a dose reduction determined by the prescriber. Lonsurf can severely reduce blood cell counts. Complete blood counts are required before each treatment cycle and on Day 15 of each cycle. Treatment may need to be paused or adjusted by the prescriber. Severe reductions in certain blood cell counts occurred more often in patients aged 65 or older. Lonsurf can harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
