In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction.

About Levoxyl
Overview
Levoxyl is a prescription tablet containing levothyroxine sodium, a synthetic version of the thyroid hormone T4. It replaces thyroid hormone in adults and children with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid). It is also used alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the management of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. It works by supplying T4, which the body converts to T3, a hormone that controls gene activity and protein production in cells.
What it treats
- Thyroid hormone replacement for an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) in children and adults, whether present at birth or acquired, and caused by thyroid, pituitary or hypothalamic problems. - Suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in well-differentiated thyroid cancer, alongside surgery and radioactive iodine treatment.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Levoxyl are mainly symptoms of too much thyroid hormone. These include headache, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, trouble sleeping, shaking, muscle weakness or cramps, tiredness, increased appetite, weight loss, sweating and difficulty tolerating heat. Diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, hair loss, flushing, skin rash and menstrual changes may also occur. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop a racing or irregular heartbeat, chest pain or shortness of breath. Serious heart effects include abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, heart attack and cardiac arrest. Older adults and people with existing heart disease have a higher risk of heart-related side effects. Seizures have been reported rarely and require urgent medical attention. Other effects include increased blood pressure, raised liver test results, reduced bone density and impaired fertility. Levoxyl may also worsen blood sugar control in people with diabetes. Careful monitoring is important to avoid too much or too little thyroid hormone.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Levoxyl if you have uncorrected adrenal insufficiency. This condition must be treated with replacement glucocorticoids before starting Levoxyl to avoid an acute adrenal crisis. Levoxyl tablets must not be used to treat myxedema coma. Extra caution is needed in older adults and people with cardiovascular disease because of the risk of heart-related adverse effects, including atrial fibrillation. If you have diabetes, Levoxyl may worsen blood sugar control. Careful blood sugar monitoring is needed when treatment is started, changed or stopped, and diabetes medicines may need adjustment. Careful monitoring is important to avoid too little or too much thyroid hormone treatment. Too much thyroid hormone can reduce bone mineral density. Pregnancy may change treatment requirements; any adjustments must be managed by your prescriber.
Interactions
Other medicines may affect how thyroid hormone is absorbed, processed, carried in the blood or used by tissues. These effects may change your response to Levoxyl. Discuss the medicines you take with your doctor.
