About Lantus
Overview
Lantus contains insulin glargine, a long-acting form of human insulin given by injection under the skin. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes. It lowers blood sugar by helping muscle and fat cells take in glucose and reducing the amount of glucose made by the liver. Lantus is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.
What it treats
- To improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. Not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include low blood sugar, allergic reactions, injection-site reactions, changes in fatty tissue under the skin, itching, rash, swelling and weight gain. Serious side effects include severe low blood sugar, severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, and low blood potassium. These can be life-threatening and require urgent medical attention. Stop using Lantus if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Changes to your insulin treatment can cause high or low blood sugar and should be made under close medical supervision with more frequent blood sugar checks. Fluid retention and heart failure can occur when Lantus is used with medicines called thiazolidinediones (TZDs); contact a doctor if signs or symptoms of heart failure occur. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid accidental mix-ups. Never share insulin syringes or needles.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Lantus during an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or if you are allergic to insulin glargine or any of its ingredients. Extra caution and more frequent blood glucose monitoring are needed if you have kidney or liver impairment, do not recognize the warning signs of low blood sugar, or have changes in your medicines, meal pattern or physical activity. Changes to your insulin regimen, injection site or administration method should be made under close medical supervision, as they can cause high or low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can be life-threatening. Check the insulin label before every injection to avoid product mix-ups. Never share insulin syringes or needles, even if the needle is changed. Severe, life-threatening allergic reactions can occur. Stop using Lantus and seek urgent medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Lantus can also cause dangerously low potassium; people at risk may need potassium monitoring. Using Lantus with thiazolidinediones (TZDs) can cause fluid retention and heart failure and requires monitoring for signs and symptoms of heart failure.
Interactions
Other diabetes medicines, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, fibrates, fluoxetine, MAO inhibitors, salicylates and sulfonamide antibiotics may increase the risk of low blood sugar with Lantus. This also applies to disopyramide, pentoxifylline and somatostatin analogues such as octreotide. Some medicines may reduce Lantus’s blood sugar-lowering effect. These include corticosteroids, diuretics, certain antipsychotics, thyroid hormones, estrogens and progestogens, including oral contraceptives, as well as danazol, glucagon, isoniazid, niacin, protease inhibitors, somatropin and medicines such as albuterol, epinephrine and terbutaline. Alcohol, beta-blockers, clonidine and lithium may either increase or decrease Lantus’s blood sugar-lowering effect. Pentamidine may cause low blood sugar, sometimes followed by high blood sugar. Beta-blockers, clonidine, guanethidine and reserpine may make the warning signs of low blood sugar less noticeable or absent. Discuss these medicines and alcohol use with your doctor. More frequent blood sugar checks may be needed, and your prescriber may need to adjust your insulin treatment.
