About INVANZ
Overview
INVANZ is a prescription antibiotic containing ertapenem sodium, supplied in a vial for injection. It treats certain moderate to severe bacterial infections in adults and children aged 3 months and older, including complicated abdominal, skin and urinary tract infections, community-acquired pneumonia and acute pelvic infections; this includes diabetic foot infections without bone infection. It is also used in adults to help prevent surgical-site infection after planned colorectal surgery. Ertapenem belongs to the carbapenem class of antibiotics and acts against bacteria that are susceptible to it.
What it treats
In adults and children aged 3 months and older, INVANZ treats moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: - Complicated infections inside the abdomen. - Complicated skin and underlying tissue infections, including diabetic foot infections without bone infection. - Community-acquired pneumonia. - Complicated urinary tract infections, including kidney infections. - Acute pelvic infections, including uterine infections after childbirth, infections associated with abortion, and infections after gynecologic surgery. In adults, it is also used to prevent surgical site infection following planned colorectal surgery.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults include diarrhea, nausea, headache and problems with the vein used for infusion. In children, common side effects include diarrhea, vomiting and pain at the infusion site. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), seizures and other effects on the brain and nervous system. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction or seizure. Contact a doctor if diarrhea occurs. It may be caused by Clostridioides difficile and can range from mild diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Ertapenem can lower valproic acid levels when used with valproic acid or divalproex sodium, increasing the risk of breakthrough seizures. Tell your doctor if you take either medicine.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use INVANZ if you are allergic to ertapenem, any of its ingredients or other medicines in the same class, or if you have had an anaphylactic reaction to a beta-lactam antibiotic. For injection into a muscle, do not use it if you are allergic to amide-type local anaesthetics, because lidocaine is used to prepare the injection. Serious allergic reactions, seizures and other effects on the central nervous system have been reported during treatment. Taking ertapenem with valproic acid or divalproex sodium can lower valproic acid levels and increase the risk of breakthrough seizures. Diarrhoea during treatment needs medical assessment because it may be caused by Clostridioides difficile and can range from mild diarrhoea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Severe kidney impairment requires the prescriber to adjust treatment. When administering an injection into a muscle, care is needed to avoid accidental injection into a blood vessel.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take probenecid, valproic acid or divalproex sodium. Probenecid reduces the removal of ertapenem by the kidneys, so using them together is not recommended. Using ertapenem with valproic acid or divalproex sodium is generally not recommended. If your seizures are well controlled with either medicine, your doctor should consider an antibiotic outside the carbapenem group.
