About Imfinzi

Overview

Imfinzi contains durvalumab, a monoclonal antibody given into a vein. It is used alone or with other treatments for adults with certain types of lung, biliary tract, liver, endometrial, bladder, stomach or gastroesophageal junction cancer. It works by blocking PD-L1, a protein that suppresses the activity of immune cells called T cells, allowing these cells to become more active.

What it treats

- Non-small cell lung cancer in adults: certain operable cancers with tumors at least 4 cm and/or lymph node involvement and no known EGFR mutations or ALK rearrangements; inoperable stage III disease that has not progressed after concurrent platinum-based chemotherapy and radiation; or metastatic disease without sensitizing EGFR mutations or ALK abnormalities. - Small cell lung cancer in adults: limited-stage disease that has not progressed after concurrent platinum-based chemotherapy and radiation, or extensive-stage disease as first-line treatment with chemotherapy. - Locally advanced or metastatic biliary tract cancer in adults, with gemcitabine and cisplatin. - Hepatocellular carcinoma in adults that cannot be removed by surgery, with tremelimumab-actl. - Primary advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer in adults with mismatch repair deficiency confirmed by an FDA-authorized test, initially with carboplatin and paclitaxel, then alone. - Bladder cancer in adults: high-risk non-muscle-invasive disease not previously treated with BCG, used with BCG; or muscle-invasive disease, used with gemcitabine and cisplatin before bladder-removal surgery and alone afterward. - Operable gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma in adults, with fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin and docetaxel chemotherapy before and after surgery, then alone.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects vary with the cancer being treated and whether Imfinzi is used alone or with other medicines. They include tiredness or weakness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, reduced appetite, abdominal pain, muscle and joint pain, rash, itching, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and respiratory infections. Some combinations also commonly cause hair loss, nerve problems in the hands or feet, mouth inflammation, headache, urinary tract infections, painful or frequent urination, and blood in the urine. Blood tests may show low blood cell counts, changes in mineral or blood sugar levels, or increases in liver enzymes or creatinine. Lung inflammation, including inflammation linked to radiation treatment, is also common in some lung cancer treatment settings and can be serious. Contact your doctor promptly about suspected serious side effects. Imfinzi can cause the immune system to attack healthy organs and tissues. These reactions can be severe or fatal and may affect any part of the body, including the lungs, bowel, liver, hormone-producing glands, skin, kidneys, and pancreas. Solid organ transplant rejection can also occur. Reactions during an infusion may require the infusion to be interrupted, slowed, or permanently stopped. Serious or fatal complications can occur in people who receive a donor stem cell transplant before or after treatment. Your healthcare team will monitor for reactions and check liver enzymes, kidney function, and thyroid function before and during treatment. Serious reactions may require treatment to be withheld or permanently stopped.

When to call your doctor

Seek medical attention immediately for: • New or worsening shortness of breath or cough. • Severe or persistent diarrhea. • Severe abdominal pain. • A severe or worsening rash. • Fever, especially with breathing problems or abdominal pain.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The FDA label lists no contraindications for Imfinzi (durvalumab). However, important warnings and precautions apply. Imfinzi can cause severe or fatal immune-related reactions affecting any organ or tissue. These include inflammation of the lungs, bowel, liver, kidneys, pancreas or skin; hormone gland disorders; kidney dysfunction; and rejection of a transplanted organ. Liver enzymes, kidney function and thyroid function should be checked before and periodically during treatment. Treatment may need to be paused or permanently stopped depending on the reaction. Infusion-related reactions may require the infusion to be slowed, interrupted or permanently stopped. Serious or fatal complications can occur in people who receive an allogeneic stem cell transplant (using donor cells) before or after treatment with a PD-1/PD-L1-blocking medicine such as Imfinzi. Imfinzi can harm an unborn baby. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.

Storage

Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
