About Hycamtin
Overview
Hycamtin capsules contain topotecan hydrochloride, a cancer medicine known as a topoisomerase inhibitor. They are used to treat small cell lung cancer that has returned in people whose cancer previously responded fully or partly to first-line chemotherapy and whose treatment ended at least 45 days earlier. Topotecan blocks an enzyme from rejoining breaks in DNA, leading to DNA damage that is thought to kill cells as they copy their DNA.
What it treats
Hycamtin capsules are used to treat relapsed small cell lung cancer in patients who previously had a complete or partial response to first-line chemotherapy and whose treatment ended at least 45 days earlier.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, hair loss, tiredness and loss of appetite. Severe reductions in white blood cells (neutropenia), red blood cells (anemia) and platelets (thrombocytopenia) are also common. Contact your doctor about serious side effects, including severe diarrhea and bone marrow suppression, which reduces blood cell production. Interstitial lung disease, a serious lung condition, has occurred and can be fatal. Hycamtin can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception and contact your doctor if you become pregnant.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Hycamtin if you have had a severe allergic reaction to topotecan. Severe diarrhea and interstitial lung disease (ILD) can occur. ILD has been fatal in some cases; Hycamtin must be permanently stopped if ILD is confirmed. Hycamtin can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception during treatment. Do not breastfeed while taking Hycamtin.
Interactions
Hycamtin capsules should not be taken with medicines that inhibit P-glycoprotein (P-gp) or breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP). Ask your doctor to check whether any medicines you take belong to these groups.

Storage
