About GLIADEL
Overview
GLIADEL is a wafer implant containing carmustine, an anticancer medicine, for use inside the skull. It is used alongside surgery and radiation to treat newly diagnosed high-grade glioma, and alongside surgery to treat recurrent glioblastoma. The wafer gradually breaks down, releasing carmustine into the space left after tumor removal, where it damages DNA and RNA in cells.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects reported in patients with newly diagnosed high-grade glioma include swelling in the brain, weakness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, problems with surgical wound healing and depression. In patients with recurrent high-grade glioma, common side effects include urinary tract infection, problems with surgical wound healing and fever. Contact a doctor promptly about seizures, increased pressure inside the skull, brain swelling, surgical wound-healing complications, or bacterial or chemical meningitis. Movement of a wafer can block the flow of fluid in the brain, causing obstructive hydrocephalus. GLIADEL can harm an unborn baby. Males and females who could conceive a child should use effective contraception.

Before taking this medicine
The label lists no contraindications for GLIADEL. However, patients need monitoring after implantation for seizures, increased pressure inside the skull, complications of skull surgery such as impaired wound healing, and bacterial or chemical meningitis. Movement of the wafer can block the flow of fluid in the brain and also requires monitoring. GLIADEL can harm an unborn baby. Males and females of reproductive potential should use effective contraception. Patients should not breastfeed.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original sachet until you use it, away from direct light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
