Overview
Fluorouracil injection is a medicine used to treat certain cancers. It is indicated for adenocarcinoma of the colon, rectum, breast, stomach and pancreas. It works as a nucleoside metabolic inhibitor, meaning it interferes with certain chemical processes within cells.

Before taking this medicine
The supplied fluorouracil injection label lists no formal contraindications. This does not mean it is suitable for everyone. Important risks include heart problems, such as chest pain, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm and heart failure; confusion or other brain and nervous system effects, including those linked to high blood ammonia; severe diarrhea; hand-foot syndrome; severe, potentially fatal suppression of blood cell production; and severe inflammation of the mouth or digestive tract lining. Treatment may need to be withheld or stopped if these occur. Taking warfarin at the same time can increase INR and other blood-clotting test results. Close monitoring of INR and prothrombin time is required. Fluorouracil can harm an unborn baby. Women and men who could have children should receive pregnancy planning and prevention counseling. If breastfeeding, either fluorouracil or breastfeeding must be stopped. These precautions come from the injection label; the supplied extract does not cover the tube product.
