Flomax

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Flomax if you are allergic to tamsulosin hydrochloride or any ingredient in the capsules. Reported allergic reactions include rash, hives, itching, swelling and breathing symptoms. Flomax should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as ketoconazole, or with other alpha blockers. Caution is needed with erythromycin, paroxetine, terbinafine, cimetidine, warfarin, other medicines that inhibit CYP3A4 or CYP2D6, and in people known to break down medicines slowly through CYP2D6. Taking Flomax with PDE5 inhibitors may cause a drop in blood pressure with symptoms. Flomax can cause dizziness, a spinning sensation, low blood pressure when standing and fainting. Avoid situations where fainting could cause injury, especially when starting treatment. Tell your prescriber if you have had a serious or life-threatening sulfa allergy. Tell your eye surgeon if you take or have previously taken Flomax before cataract surgery. It has been linked to intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, which can complicate surgery. The benefit of stopping treatment before surgery has not been established. Rarely, Flomax has been associated with a persistent, painful erection unrelated to sexual activity. This requires medical attention because it can cause permanent erectile dysfunction if not properly treated. Prostate cancer screening is recommended before treatment and at regular intervals afterwards. Flomax is not indicated for children. Some older adults may be more sensitive to its effects. It has not been studied in people with end-stage kidney disease or severe liver impairment.
