About Firmagon
Overview
Firmagon contains degarelix (as acetate), a medicine known as a GnRH receptor antagonist. It is used to treat patients with advanced prostate cancer. It works by blocking GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, reducing the release of hormones that lead to testosterone production.

Advanced prostate cancer.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include injection-site pain, redness, swelling or hardening, hot flashes, and increased liver enzyme levels in blood tests. Serious allergic reactions have been reported, including anaphylaxis, hives and swelling beneath the skin (angioedema). Seek immediate medical help if a severe allergic reaction occurs; Firmagon must be stopped if this happens. Firmagon may prolong the QT interval, a change in the heart’s electrical activity. Contact your doctor about this risk. Firmagon can also harm an unborn baby; contact your doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs during treatment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Firmagon if you have had a severe allergic reaction to degarelix or any of its components. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, hives and angioedema (swelling), have been reported. If a severe allergic reaction occurs, Firmagon must be stopped and appropriate medical care provided. Firmagon may prolong the QT interval, a change in the heart’s electrical activity. Caution is needed in people with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, as these groups have not been studied. Firmagon can harm an unborn baby and may impair fertility.
Interactions
No drug–drug interaction studies have been conducted with Firmagon. Degarelix is not processed by the CYP450 enzyme system and did not increase or block its activity in laboratory studies, so clinically significant interactions involving this system are unlikely.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
