About Ferrlecit
Overview
Ferrlecit contains sodium ferric gluconate complex, an iron replacement medicine given into a vein. It treats iron deficiency anemia in adults and children aged 6 years and older with chronic kidney disease who are receiving hemodialysis and supplemental epoetin therapy. It replenishes the body’s iron, which is needed to make hemoglobin, the substance that helps blood carry oxygen.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, injection site reactions, low or high blood pressure, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, cramps, leg cramps and pain. In children aged 6 to 15 years, common side effects include low or high blood pressure, headache, a fast heartbeat and vomiting. Serious risks include allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and low blood pressure. Seek immediate medical help for a suspected serious allergic reaction. Tell your healthcare team promptly about shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness or a fast heartbeat. Monitoring is required during treatment and for at least 30 minutes afterward, and until you are clinically stable. Iron overload is another serious risk. Regular blood monitoring is needed during treatment, and Ferrlecit must not be given to patients with iron overload. Benzyl alcohol toxicity is also a risk, particularly in premature and low-birth-weight infants.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not receive Ferrlecit if you have a known allergy to sodium ferric gluconate or any of its ingredients, or if you have iron overload. Allergic reactions have included anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. Ferrlecit must be given where staff and treatments for severe allergic reactions are immediately available. Monitoring is required during treatment and for at least 30 minutes afterward, and until you are clinically stable. Ferrlecit may also cause low blood pressure, which requires monitoring during and after each administration. Regular blood tests are needed to monitor your response and help avoid iron overload. During pregnancy, Ferrlecit should be used only if clearly needed. Allergic reactions may have serious consequences for the fetus, and Ferrlecit contains benzyl alcohol. It is not recommended while breastfeeding. Premature and low-birth-weight infants may be more vulnerable to benzyl alcohol toxicity. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 6 years of age.
Interactions
Drug interactions with Ferrlecit have not been studied. Ferrlecit may reduce the absorption of oral iron taken at the same time. Tell your doctor if you take oral iron medicines or supplements.

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze, and use immediately once opened. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
