About Femara

Overview

Femara contains letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is used for hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer, including extended treatment after prior standard tamoxifen therapy. It is also used as first- or second-line treatment for advanced breast cancer when hormone receptor status is positive or unknown. It works by blocking the aromatase enzyme, reducing the production of estrogen that can support the growth of some breast cancers.

What it treats

- Hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as adjuvant treatment. - Early breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as extended adjuvant treatment after prior standard adjuvant tamoxifen therapy. - Advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or unknown hormone receptor status, as first- or second-line treatment.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include hot flashes, flushing, joint pain, bone and muscle pain, weakness, swelling, headache, dizziness, increased sweating and high cholesterol. Fatigue and drowsiness may also occur. Use caution when operating machinery. Letrozole can reduce bone mineral density and increase cholesterol. Discuss these risks with your doctor; bone density and cholesterol monitoring may be needed. Letrozole can harm an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. If you could become pregnant, the label recommends a pregnancy test and effective contraception.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Femara (letrozole) if you are pregnant or allergic to letrozole or any of its ingredients. It can harm an unborn baby. If you could become pregnant, a pregnancy test is needed before treatment, and effective contraception should be used. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Letrozole may reduce bone mineral density and increase total cholesterol. Your clinician may consider monitoring your bone density and cholesterol. It may also cause tiredness, dizziness or sleepiness, so use caution when operating machinery.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
