Cardiovascular Risk
NSAIDs may cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke, which can be fatal. This risk may increase with duration of use. Patients with cardiovascular disease or risk factors for cardiovascular disease may be at greater risk (see WARNINGS ).
Piroxicam capsules are contraindicated for the treatment of peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery (see WARNINGS ).
Gastrointestinal Risk
NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal. These events can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients are at greater risk for serious gastrointestinal events (see WARNINGS ).
About Feldene
Overview
Feldene contains piroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to relieve the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory action helps reduce inflammation.
What it treats
- Osteoarthritis: relief of signs and symptoms. - Rheumatoid arthritis: relief of signs and symptoms.
Safety information
Side effects
Commonly reported side effects include stomach pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, gas, reduced appetite, headache, dizziness, itching, rash, ringing in the ears and swelling from fluid buildup. Anemia, increased bleeding time, raised liver enzymes and abnormal kidney function have also been reported. Contact a doctor promptly for serious side effects, including stomach or intestinal ulcers, bleeding or perforation. Reported signs of bleeding include vomiting blood, black stools and rectal bleeding. Other serious effects include heart failure, heart attack, irregular heartbeat, liver inflammation or failure, yellowing of the skin or eyes, kidney inflammation or failure, blood in the urine, changes in urine output and serious blood cell disorders. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, seizures, or severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Feldene if you are allergic to piroxicam, or if you have had asthma, hives or an allergic-type reaction after taking aspirin or another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Severe, rarely fatal allergic reactions have been reported in these patients. Feldene must not be used to treat pain around the time of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
