About Faslodex

Overview

Faslodex contains fulvestrant, an estrogen receptor blocker used to treat certain types of advanced breast cancer. Used alone, it treats postmenopausal women with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative disease not previously treated with hormone therapy, or HR-positive disease that has progressed after hormone therapy. For HR-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer, it may be combined with ribociclib in postmenopausal women as initial hormone-based treatment or after progression, or with palbociclib or abemaciclib in women whose disease has progressed after hormone therapy. It works by blocking estrogen receptors and reducing their number in breast cancer cells, limiting the growth signals estrogen can provide.

What it treats

• Hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have not previously received endocrine (hormone) therapy. • HR-positive advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose cancer has progressed after endocrine therapy. • HR-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women, with ribociclib, as initial endocrine-based therapy or after progression on endocrine therapy. • HR-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer in women whose cancer has progressed after endocrine therapy, with palbociclib or abemaciclib.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include pain at the injection site, nausea, bone or joint pain, headache, back pain, tiredness, pain in the arms or legs, hot flushes, vomiting, loss of appetite, weakness, muscle and bone pain, cough, shortness of breath and constipation. Increased liver enzyme levels can also occur. Contact a doctor if you develop bleeding or an injection-site reaction, particularly symptoms that could involve nerve injury. Bleeding risk needs particular attention if you have a bleeding disorder, a low platelet count or take anticoagulants (blood thinners). Injections near the sciatic nerve require caution because of the risk of nerve injury. Faslodex can harm an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Use effective contraception if you could become pregnant.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Faslodex if you have a known allergy to fulvestrant or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions, including hives and swelling beneath the skin, have been reported. Use requires caution if you have a bleeding disorder, a low platelet count or take anticoagulants (blood thinners). Tell your prescriber if you have liver impairment, as moderate impairment increases exposure to the medicine. Care is needed when injecting into the buttock because of the nearby sciatic nerve. Faslodex can harm an unborn baby. If you could become pregnant, use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Faslodex can interfere with certain blood tests for estradiol, causing falsely high results. Tell the clinician arranging the test that you are receiving Faslodex.

Interactions

The label reports no known drug interactions with Faslodex (fulvestrant). Studies with ketoconazole and rifampin found no change in how the body processes fulvestrant.
