About Farxiga
Overview
Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is a prescription tablet belonging to a group of medicines called SGLT2 inhibitors. It is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes. It also helps reduce the risk of worsening kidney function, kidney failure and certain heart-related complications in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression, and reduces cardiovascular death and heart failure-related hospital or urgent visits in adults with heart failure. It works by blocking a protein in the kidneys so that more sugar passes out of the body in urine, while also reducing sodium reabsorption.
What it treats
• Chronic kidney disease at risk of progression in adults: to reduce the risk of sustained decline in kidney function, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure. • Heart failure in adults: to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization and urgent visits for heart failure. • Type 2 diabetes in adults with cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors: to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure. • Type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 years and older: to improve blood sugar control alongside diet and exercise.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include genital yeast infections in women, inflammation of the nose and throat (nasopharyngitis), and urinary tract infections. Serious side effects that need prompt medical attention include ketoacidosis, loss of body fluid (volume depletion), serious urinary infections including kidney infections and urinary infections that lead to sepsis, and low blood sugar when Farxiga is used with insulin or medicines that stimulate insulin release. Ketoacidosis can occur regardless of blood sugar level; Farxiga should be stopped if it is suspected. Seek immediate medical attention for pain, tenderness, redness or swelling around the genitals or the area between the genitals and anus, together with fever or feeling unwell. These may be signs of Fournier’s gangrene, a serious infection that destroys tissue and requires urgent treatment.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Farxiga if you have had a serious allergic reaction to dapagliflozin or any of its other ingredients. Reported reactions include anaphylaxis and angioedema (swelling). Farxiga requires caution in people at risk of ketoacidosis, including those with type 1 diabetes. Ketoacidosis can occur regardless of blood glucose levels. Ketone monitoring may be needed. If ketoacidosis is suspected, Farxiga must be stopped and the condition assessed; it should not be restarted until ketoacidosis has resolved. Older adults, people with kidney impairment or low systolic blood pressure, and those taking diuretics need assessment of fluid levels and kidney function before treatment, with monitoring during treatment. Older adults have a higher risk of low-blood-pressure-related side effects, while people with kidney impairment have a higher risk of fluid-depletion-related side effects. Urinary and genital infections require prompt assessment and treatment. These can include serious urinary infections, kidney infections, genital fungal infections and a rare severe infection around the genitals or perineum called Fournier’s gangrene. Seek immediate medical assessment for pain, tenderness, redness or swelling in this area together with fever or feeling unwell. Farxiga must be stopped if Fournier’s gangrene is suspected. Using Farxiga with insulin or medicines that stimulate insulin release increases the risk of low blood sugar. Farxiga may pose a risk to the fetus during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. It is not recommended while breastfeeding.
Interactions
Taking Farxiga with insulin or medicines that increase insulin release, such as sulfonylureas, may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Your prescriber may need to adjust these medicines to reduce this risk. Farxiga may lower lithium levels in the blood. If you take lithium, your doctor should check your lithium levels more frequently when Farxiga is started or its dose is changed. Farxiga increases sugar in the urine, causing positive urine glucose tests. Urine glucose tests and the blood test called 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) should not be used to monitor blood sugar control while taking Farxiga. Your doctor should use other monitoring methods.
