About Erythromycin

Overview

Erythromycin tablets contain erythromycin, a macrolide antibiotic. They are used to treat certain infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including mild to moderate respiratory tract and skin infections, as well as whooping cough. Erythromycin works by blocking the production of proteins that susceptible bacteria need.

What it treats

Erythromycin tablets are used for infections caused by susceptible organisms, including: • Certain mild to moderate upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including respiratory infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. For upper respiratory infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, treatment requires a sulfonamide antibiotic alongside erythromycin. • Mild to moderate skin and skin structure infections, and erythrasma. • Listeriosis. • Whooping cough (pertussis). • Diphtheria, alongside antitoxin, and elimination of diphtheria bacteria in carriers. • Intestinal amebiasis; infection outside the intestine requires other medicines. • Certain chlamydial infections, including newborn conjunctivitis, infant pneumonia and urogenital infections during pregnancy. • Uncomplicated chlamydial urethral, cervical or rectal infections in adults, and nongonococcal urethritis caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum, when tetracyclines cannot be used or tolerated. • Primary syphilis as an alternative for patients allergic to penicillins. • Legionnaires’ disease, although evidence of effectiveness is limited.

Safety information

Side effects

The most frequent side effects are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and loss of appetite. Contact a doctor if you develop symptoms of liver inflammation or liver problems, or severe diarrhea, which may be a sign of pseudomembranous colitis and can occur during or after treatment. Erythromycin has also been associated with changes in the heart’s electrical activity (QT prolongation) and serious abnormal heart rhythms. Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, or a severe skin reaction. Allergic reactions can include hives. Rarely reported skin reactions include erythema multiforme, Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Other serious effects reported include kidney inflammation, rare cases of pancreatitis and seizures, and isolated cases of reversible hearing loss, mainly in people with reduced kidney function or those receiving high doses. Contact a doctor if you experience hearing changes or other concerning symptoms.

When to call your doctor

- Hives or a severe skin rash. - A fast or irregular heartbeat. - Severe diarrhea during or after antibiotic treatment. - Seizures. - New hearing loss. Seek medical attention immediately if any of these occur.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take erythromycin if you have a known allergy to erythromycin or are taking terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, ergotamine or dihydroergotamine. Do not take erythromycin with lovastatin or simvastatin. These combinations increase the risk of muscle damage, including serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis).

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take colchicine, simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, verapamil, amlodipine or diltiazem. Colchicine taken with erythromycin can cause potentially life-threatening toxicity, even when both medicines are used as prescribed. Simvastatin, lovastatin and atorvastatin can interact with erythromycin and cause serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). Verapamil, amlodipine and diltiazem can interact with erythromycin and cause low blood pressure. If lovastatin and erythromycin are used together, your doctor should closely monitor blood tests for muscle injury and liver enzymes.
