ERIVEDGE can cause embryo-fetal death or severe birth defects when administered to a pregnant woman. ERIVEDGE is embryotoxic, fetotoxic, and teratogenic in animals. Teratogenic effects included severe midline defects, missing digits, and other irreversible malformations.
Verify the pregnancy status of females of reproductive potential within 7 days prior to initiating ERIVEDGE. Advise pregnant women of the potential risks to a fetus. Advise females of reproductive potential to use effective contraception during and after ERIVEDGE.

About Erivedge
Overview
Erivedge is a prescription medicine containing vismodegib, supplied as capsules. It treats adults with basal cell carcinoma that has spread to other parts of the body. It is also used for locally advanced basal cell carcinoma when the cancer has returned after surgery or surgery is not suitable, and radiation is not suitable. It works by blocking a protein called Smoothened, which is involved in a cell-signalling pathway called Hedgehog.
What it treats
- Metastatic basal cell carcinoma (cancer that has spread) in adults. - Locally advanced basal cell carcinoma in adults when radiation is not an option and either the cancer has returned after surgery or surgery is not an option.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include muscle spasms, hair loss, changes in taste or loss of taste, weight loss, tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, constipation, joint pain and vomiting. Serious risks include harm to an unborn baby, severe skin reactions, muscle and joint problems, and premature closure of bone growth plates. Contact your doctor if you develop a severe skin reaction or muscle or joint problems, or if pregnancy occurs. Severe skin reactions require permanent discontinuation of Erivedge. Muscle or joint problems may require a treatment interruption or discontinuation under your doctor’s direction. Do not donate blood or blood products during treatment or for 24 months after the final dose. Males must not donate semen during treatment or for 3 months after treatment ends.
