About Eloctate
Overview
Eloctate is a recombinant factor VIII replacement medicine given by injection into a vein. It is used in adults and children with hemophilia A to control bleeding episodes, manage bleeding around surgery, and help reduce how often bleeding occurs. It works by temporarily replacing the missing factor VIII protein needed for blood to clot. Eloctate is not indicated for treating von Willebrand disease.
What it treats
- Treatment and control of bleeding episodes in adults and children with haemophilia A (congenital factor VIII deficiency). - Management of bleeding around surgery in adults and children with haemophilia A. - Routine prevention to reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adults and children with haemophilia A. Not indicated for the treatment of von Willebrand disease.
Safety information
Side effects
The most frequently reported side effects in previously treated patients were joint pain, feeling unwell, muscle pain, headache and rash. In previously untreated patients, they were antibodies that block Factor VIII activity, blood clots related to a medical device and a rash with raised bumps. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are possible. If symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, stop Eloctate immediately and seek urgent medical care. Contact your doctor if bleeding is not controlled. Antibodies that block Factor VIII activity may develop, and testing may be needed. Blood clots related to a medical device also warrant prompt medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Eloctate if you have ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to Eloctate or any of its ingredients: sucrose, sodium chloride, L-histidine, calcium chloride or polysorbate 20. Severe allergic reactions can occur during treatment. If symptoms of an allergic reaction occur, stop using Eloctate immediately and seek urgent medical treatment. Antibodies that block factor VIII activity, called inhibitors, have been reported. If expected factor VIII levels are not reached or bleeding is not controlled despite appropriate treatment, testing for these inhibitors is needed.

Dosing

Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
