Before taking this medicine

Do not take Edurant with carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, rifapentine, systemic dexamethasone used for more than a single treatment dose, St. John’s wort, or proton pump inhibitors such as esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole or rabeprazole. These medicines can lower rilpivirine levels, leading to loss of HIV control and possible drug resistance. Liver disease, including hepatitis B or C, or raised liver enzymes requires caution and liver tests before and during treatment. Liver injury has also occurred in people without previous liver disease, so monitoring may be considered for them too. Severe skin and hypersensitivity reactions have been reported. Stop treatment immediately and seek medical care if a hypersensitivity reaction occurs, or if a rash develops with symptoms affecting the rest of the body or raised liver blood test results. Severe depression requires immediate medical assessment. Immune reconstitution syndrome, an inflammatory response as the immune system recovers, may occur. Rilpivirine exposure is generally lower during pregnancy than after delivery.
