Durezol

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Durezol if you have most active viral infections of the cornea or conjunctiva, including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia or varicella. It must also not be used with mycobacterial eye infections or fungal infections of eye structures. Great caution is needed if you have a history of herpes simplex. Corticosteroids used in the eye may prolong or worsen viral eye infections. They may also mask or worsen bacterial infections and increase the risk of secondary infections. Long-term use may allow fungal infections of the cornea to develop. A persistent corneal ulcer needs assessment for possible fungal infection. Prolonged use may raise eye pressure and cause glaucoma, optic nerve damage or vision problems. Eye pressure should be monitored if Durezol is used for 10 days or longer. Corticosteroids may also cause cataracts. Use after cataract surgery may delay healing and increase the risk of bleb formation. If the cornea or sclera is thinned by disease, corticosteroid use may cause a hole or tear in these tissues. If signs and symptoms do not improve after 2 days, you should be reassessed.
